When her staffing firm clients ask for advice on how to stand out in the marketplace, consultant Jane Blocker, CSP, suggests a nontraditional solution that has always worked for her.


“My team came up with this idea many years ago,” says Blocker, principal of Jane Blocker Consulting in Dallas. At the time, she was working for a staffing company that had many young employees who wanted to give back to the community.

Each person on Blocker's team began volunteering up to 10 hours a month—on company time. One person worked as a literacy volunteer. One helped run a soup kitchen. Another built houses with Habitat for Humanity.

“We were all out in the community doing something we had a passion for and working with others whom we might not have met otherwise,” Blocker explains. “We found we were building relationships, building trust, giving back, and yes, bringing in new clients and candidates because of our involvement.”
